Can repayments be structured seasonally or with a payment holiday?

Yes. Seasonal repayment structures and payment holidays are both available on UK SMB loans, though not from every lender. Seasonal structures align repayments with predictable income cycles (busy summer, quiet winter) and are most common in agriculture, hospitality, and seasonal retail. Payment holidays are short pauses (typically 1 to 6 months) at the start, middle or end of an agreement, used during fit-out, ramp-up or unexpected disruption.

Seasonal repayment options. Two structures dominate. Stepped repayments: lower payments during low-income months, higher payments during peak. Common in agriculture (low winter, high harvest) and hospitality (low January-February, high summer). Skip-month: no payment due in defined off-season months, with the missed amount caught up across the active months. Specialist agricultural lenders and some asset finance providers (Aldermore, Time Finance) offer this against tractors, balers and seasonal plant.

Payment holidays. An initial holiday (deferred first payment) is common on fit-out and asset finance, allowing the equipment time to install or the premises time to open before repayments begin. Typical holiday lengths are 1 to 6 months. A mid-term holiday (during operational disruption, typically 1 to 3 months) can be requested but is at the lender's discretion: some lenders pre-build flexibility into the agreement, others treat it as a forbearance request. End-term balloon payments effectively defer principal to the end of the term, reducing intra-term cashflow strain.

The cost of seasonal or holiday structures. Both increase the total cost of credit modestly because more interest accrues during deferred periods. The trade-off is straightforward: pay slightly more in total to align repayments with cashflow, versus pay less in total but risk default during a low-income month. For seasonal businesses the trade-off is usually worth it.
